Elk Grove Village house fire displaces 8 residents

Eight residents were displaced yesterday by a fire that destroyed their Elk Grove Village home, officials said. Fire crews responded about 8:15 a.m. to a garage fire in the 500 block of Walnut Lane, Elk Grove Village Fire Battalion Chief Mark Percudani said. By the time firefighters arrived, he said, the fire had spread from the attached garage to the attic of the ranch house. Full story.

Elgin fire leaves home uninhabitable, no injuries reported

Nobody was injured in a fire yesterday morning that left an Elgin home uninhabitable, officials said. Shortly after 7:30 a.m., Elgin fire crews arrived at a home in the 800 block of Patricia Avenue to see smoke coming from a roof vent of an attached garage, according to a news release. Full story.

In the face of increasing concern about teen anxiety, depression and drug abuse, leaders in Naperville are focusing on resilience, a set of hard-to-define skills that help manage stress and avoid unhealthy coping mechanisms. Loving Your Kid Without Losing Your Mind," spoke at a forum hosted by the nonprofit ParentsMatterToo, which aims to help parents build tools to guide kids away from drugs and other hazardous behaviors. Cancer survivor, 78, earns black belt from Arlington Heights dojo

Bob Koga has been practicing the Japanese martial art of aikido two hours a day, up to five times per week for the past nine years with one goal in mind - a black belt. On Thursday, Koga, a 78-year-old Palatine resident and the oldest student at the Ryoshinkan Dojo in Arlington Heights, was presented with his black belt and a hakama - a traditional Japanese garment - inscribed with his name. After six weeks games of games in which fans often were bored to tears by the lack of scoring at the United Center, the 22,007 in attendance last night certainly got their money's worth in a 6-3 Chicago Blackhawks victory over Colorado. The goal horn sounded eight times in less than 39 minutes, with fans dancing to "Chelsea Dagger" six times, and the Hawks raced to their seventh straight victory. Full story.

Packers, Seahawks advance in NFC playoffs

After a rough start yesterday, the wild-card Packers beat the NFC East champions from Washington 35-18 to reach the divisional round. In Minnesota, Blair Walsh's 27-yard field goal miss handed the Seattle Seahawks a 10-9 victory over the stunned Vikings in their wild-card round playoff game in below-zero weather. Green Bay (11-6) will play at the No. 2 seed Arizona Cardinals on Saturday night, and the No. 1 seed Carolina Panthers will host the Seahawks on Sunday.

'Martian,' 'Revenant' take top Golden Globes

Alejandro Inarritu's bloody frontier thriller "The Revenant" landed an upset win at the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards, taking best film, best director and best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. Inarritu added best director, besting the favored Ridley Scott, director of the science-fiction survival tale "The Martian." That film, however, won best film comedy and best actor in a comedy for Matt Damon. Full story.
