Detroit Pistons boosting youth recreation basketball

DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Pistons are donating $300,000 to the Detroit Police Athletic League to support youth recreation basketball in the Detroit area.

Funds will be used to create and operate a new recreational basketball league in partnership with the Detroit Recreation Department and other area recreation centers.

The money is from Pistons owner Tom Gores, Palace Sports & Entertainment Vice Chairman Arn Tellem and the Detroit Pistons Foundation.

The team says more than 2,100 children will have the chance to get basketball instruction and access to mentoring and leadership development from volunteers and Detroit police officers. Pistons guard Reggie Jackson will serve as the league's honorary captain.

The new recreational league aligns with the Pistons' "Jr. Pistons" affinity club and the NBA's "Jr. NBA" program.
