Elk Grove teen charged with attempting to rob man she met online

An Elk Grove Village teenager who authorities say used a fake social networking profile to meet and rob men was ordered held on $50,000 bail Friday.

Karena Villegas, 18, was charged with attempted robbery and aggravated battery, felonies that carry maximum sentences of five years in prison.

Villegas posted a profile online using a fake name and photo, said Cook County assistant state's attorney David Shin. She arranged to meet a man at 2 a.m. Nov. 19 in a Mount Prospect parking lot for "casual or intimate contact," Shin said.

The man arrived at the designated spot, got out of his car and was confronted by Villegas and another man, Shin said. The man with Villegas, who remains at large, grabbed the other man's arm and ordered him to surrender his money, said Shin. When the first man attempted to flee, both Villegas and the man she was with punched him, Shin said.

The man escaped and contacted police. He suffered facial bruises and his car was damaged, Shin said.

The man identified his male attacker, whose Facebook page led police to Villegas, Shin said.

After Mount Prospect police arrested her Thursday, Villegas admitted she set up the fake account to target single men, Shin said.

Villegas next appears in court on Jan. 29.
