Hanover Park man charged with breaking into Streamwood home

A Hanover Park man was ordered held on a total bail of $70,000 Friday after he was charged with burglarizing a Streamwood home while the owner was out of town.

Alejandro Hernandez, 28, of the 1300 block of Kingsbury Drive, was arrested Thursday and charged with residential burglary and possession of a controlled substance. If convicted of the most serious charge, he faces up to 30 years in prison based on his criminal background, prosecutors say.

On Dec. 22, a man who was looking after his neighbor's home while the homeowner was out of town noticed the front door had been forced open, said Cook County assistant state's attorney David Shin. As the neighbor attempted to enter the home, which had been ransacked, Hernandez slammed the door in his face, Shin said.

Hernandez then fled through the rear patio door, and the neighbor saw him enter a silver Mercury Marquis with tinted rear windows, Shin said.

Streamwood police pulled over the vehicle Thursday and arrested Hernandez, who had three pills for which he had no prescription, Shin said.

Hernandez's criminal background includes a conviction for aggravated domestic violence in 2010 and misdemeanor criminal trespass to land in the same year. He also has nine violations for driving without a license and driving on a suspended license, Shin said.

Hernandez next appears in court on Jan. 29.
