Hinsdale South's Benson nets MVP honor
Hinsdale South senior center Barret Benson has earned Daily Herald MVP honors for his recent boys basketball efforts.
Barret Benson, Hinsdale South: The Hornets' 6-foot-10 senior center led the 32-team Jack Tosh Holiday Classic in scoring and rebounding while powering Hinsdale South to a third-place finish. In five games - four wins - the Northwestern recruit averaged 22.2 points and 11.6 rebounds and shot 63 percent from the field.
Desmond Douglas, Elgin: This talented point guard helped Elgin secure its second holiday tournament title this season by averaging 16.3 points in 4 wins at Marengo's E.C. Nichols Holiday Classic. The 5-foot-8 senior scored 23 points in a semifinal victory over North Boone and he paced the Maroons with 16 points in a 64-58 championship-game victory over Rockford Christian.
C.J. Duff, Carmel Catholic: He played large in Minny. The Western Illinois-bound guard averaged 19 points in helping the Corsairs win 2 of 3 games in a tournament in Minnesota, despite playing one game with the flu. Then, playing point guard for the first time this season, he poured in a season-high 29 points in a 77-63 win over Mundelein.
Frankie Mack, Prospect: Mack's fine play at Wheeling's Hardwood Classic helped the Knights finish with a 3-1 tournament record and a consolation championship. In Prospect's three victories, Mack averaged 20 points, with totals of 14-for-21 shooting from 2-point range, 7-for-12 shooting from 3-point range, 13-for-15 at the free throw line to go with 10 assists.
