July trial set for Illinois man in 1990 Iowa slaying

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - The third trial of an Illinois man accused of killing a 9-year-old Illinois girl in Iowa in 1990 is scheduled to begin July 5.

The trial of Stanley Liggins was to begin Jan. 19, but his attorney sought more time. A Scott County judge set the new date Tuesday.

Liggins has been convicted twice of killing the girl. The Iowa Supreme Court overturned his 1993 conviction. In November 2013 the Iowa Appeals Court vacated Liggins' second conviction and ordered a new trial. He'd been sentenced to life in prison after each conviction.

Authorities say Jennifer Lewis was killed after she disappeared from her Rock Island, Illinois, neighborhood in 1990. Investigators say she was raped, strangled, wrapped in a plastic bag, doused with gasoline and set on fire near a Davenport school.

This story has been corrected to show that Jennifer Lewis was from Illinois, not Iowa.
