Hoffman Estates' Ward will join Lewis' baseball program

After graduating from Hoffman Estates High School this spring, pitcher Ryan Ward will continue his baseball career at Lewis University in Romeoville.

The senior made his commitment in early December as one of seven other recruits who will join coach Tim McDonough's program.

Ward, a 6-foot-2, 216-pound right-hander, has earned three letters at Hoffman Estates and is a member of the National Honor Society and honor roll.

As a junior, Ward finished with a school-record 9 wins while losing only 3.

He had a no-hitter, 2.33 ERA, 72 strikeouts and only 13 walks.

Ward was named to the Mid-Suburban League all-conference team and was a Daily Herald all-area selection team as a junior.

“Ryan comes from a strong, supportive family and has a terrific work ethic,” said Hoffman Estates coach Todd Meador. “I knew when he joined the varsity team as a sophomore he would be a special pitcher. Every time he takes the mound our team knows he will give us a chance to win.”

Football

St. Norbert College senior defensive back Frank Laterza (St. Viator) has been named to the 25-man American Football Coaches Association Division III All-America Team.

The Barrington Hills native was one of four defensive backs selected. He is St. Norbert's first AFCA All-American since 2006.

Laterza was named Midwest Conference Defensive Skill Player of the Year following a year where he led the Green Knights to a 10-1 overall record and an unbeaten 10-win regular season.

St. Norbert won the Midwest Conference championship, its 16th since 1985, with a 16-7 win over Monmouth College in the league's title game on Nov. 14.

Laterza led the Green Knights this season with 6 interceptions with 121 return yards. He added 7 passes defended, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 forced fumble to his total of 23 tackles. St. Norbert's defense allowed just 155.5 yards passing per game and the unit finished with 21 interceptions, its most since 2006. The Green Knights also allowed just 13.4 points per game this season.

Laterza becomes the fifth St. Norbert football player to earn six AFCA All-America honors, all coming since 2000. Jerimiah Janssen was named at linebacker in 2000 and 2001, Kevin O'Malley at offensive line in 2002, Joe Masciopinto at defensive back in 2003 and Bob Forstrom at kicker in 2006.

“Frankly, I'm not surprised,” said Lions varsity coach John Scotillo about Mastrodomenico taking on a leaderhip role as a sophomore. “Gina is a natural motivator.”
