Libertyville's Mayer giving Augustana's opponents fits

The holiday season is the 'giving' season and Libertyville graduate Olivia Mayer has done exactly that with the basketball for her Augustana women's team.

The senior guard leads the Vikings with 39 assists.

Mayer earned all-tournament honors at Dubuque's Jon Davison Classic after averaging 15 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in losses to Grinnell (85-80 in overtime) and Defiance (63-56).

Mayer also has 12 steals for the Vikings defense which has been exceptional, holding opponents to just 56.4 points per game on .311 shooting from the floor.

They've forced 174 turnovers - 50 more than they've committed - and have recorded 97 steals in nine games.

Freshman Carly McCameron (Antioch) leads the Vikings in shooting percentage. She has hit 12-of-19 for a .632 clip.

• Concordia-Chicago's Morgan Jahnke (Grant) hit a layup to cap a 13-0 run that gave the Cougars a 19-8 lead en route to a 68-57 over Lawrence College.

Jahnke later hit 2 free throws for a 76-70 lead and had a 3-point play with 2:34 left to give CUC a 12-point lead and locked up the game.

Men's basketball

Villanova freshman Jalen Brunson (Stevenson) scored all 15 of his points (two 3-pointers) in the second half of an 85-71 win over Creighton.

The win boosted the Wildcats to a 12-2 and 2-0 before a sellout crowd in its conference home opener Saturday night.

• Lake Forest sophomore guard Eric Porter (Deerfield) connected a school-record 11 3-pointers in an 81-76 win at Coe College. He finished the contest with a career-high 37 points in leading the Foresters, who trailed by as many as 17 in the first half, to the comeback victory. Porter shot 12-for-17 from the field and 11-for-15 from beyond the arc.

Men's hockey

Penn State senior forward Tommy Olczyk, son of former Blackhawk and NHL TV analyst Eddie Olczyk, was named the 'second star of the week' for the Big Ten.

He scored his first career hat trick with 3 goals in a victory over Princeton.

Olczyk scored the first 2 goals of the game before adding an empty-net goal to clinch the win. He recorded the third hat trick in program history as the Nittany Lions extended their school record unbeaten streak to nine games.
