Elgin woman died on birthday getting doughnuts for 3 kids

Elgin woman, Erika Galvan, who died after her 2015 Toyota sport utility vehicle crashed into Tyler Creek on Monday, her birthday, was getting doughnuts for three kids, a relative said yesterday. Galvan is remembered for her big heart and her endearing personality. Full story.

St. Alphonsus school in Prospect Hts. may be forced to close

Prospect Heights' St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic School may have to close at the end of this school year if the school doesn't receive at least $300,000 in pledges by Monday. The money is needed to give the school time to increase their enrollment up to 220 students from its current 160. Full story.

South Elgin park receives award, seeks more help

The Illinois Park and Recreation Association has recognized South Elgin's SEBA Park as an outstanding park facility for its unique achievements and design. "We are pretty honored that we were able to put (an application) packet that received the highest (rating)," South Elgin Parks and Recreation Director Kim Wascher said. Former Grayslake PTO treasurer could face prison time

A former treasurer of Grayslake's Frederick School PTO, Elizabeth Bako, could be sentenced to jail time or prison if her probation is revoked at a court hearing scheduled for Jan. 25. Documents filed by Lake County officials claim Bako still owes a portion of the restitution money she was supposed to pay after pleading guilty to stealing $17,000 from the school's PTO from April 2011 to May 2012. Even though he was a No. 22 pick and a newcomer to Chicago, Bulls fans have rallied behind Bobby Portis, who is now a regular in the lineup.
