Murphy, Schoessling lead Rolling Meadows past TF South

Rolling Meadows got a big all-around game from junior forward Jared Murphy to earn a victory on the second day of boys basketball tournament play at York on Monday.

Murphy scored a game-high 25 points on 7-for-16 shooting from the field and 10-for-12 from the free throw line as the Mustangs handled Thorton Fractional South 52-39.

Jack Schoessling finished with 15 points and shot 3-for-4 from 3-point range for the Mustangs (2-8).

Murphy finished with a team-best 8 rebounds.

Rolling Meadows was in a tie game at the half but took command by outscoring TF South 20-4 in the third quarter.

Bron Hill led TF South with 11 points.

Matt Wojcik had 4 points and a team-best 4 assists for the Mustangs, who meet Waubonsie Valley at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in a consolation bracket semifinal.

St. Laurence 55, Elk Grove 54: The Grens came up a point shy at York after shooting 11-for-31 from 2-point range and turning the ball over 16 times.

Joey Gatziolis led the Grens in scoring with 15 points and Brad Hubly had 10; Tyree Howard and Fulton Wingba both contributed 7.

Elk Grove (6-7) shot 8-for-16 from 3-point range, getting 2 from both Hubly and Wingba.

Willie Walton led all scorers for St. Laurence with 21 points; he also had 4 steals.

St. Ignatius 50, Schaumburg 47: The Wolfpack used a big fourth-quarter comeback to send the Saxons to a second straight tournament loss.

The Saxons led 40-32 entering the last period but were outscored 18-7 the rest of the way.

Aaron Kline scored 15 points to lead Schaumburg (2-9), and Kameron Powell and Jason Schoo had 9 apiece.

Kline and Sam Smith (9 points) each made three 3s for the Saxons, who committed 17 turnovers. Of those, 11 came on steals by St. Ignatius.

Top scorer for the Wolfpack was William Fleming with 14 points.

Powell led Schaumburg in both rebounds (6) and assists (5).

Pekin 37, Hersey 35: Mark Milligan scored a game-high 19 points but the Huskies came up a bucket short in opening-round play at Pekin's Holiday Classic.

Milligan shot 5-for-10 from the field and 3-for-6 from 3-point range, while Joe Coffaro (6 points) contributed a team-best 3 assists and Kevin Starr led Hersey with 5 rebounds.

The Huskies made 7 of 8 free throws, while Pekin made good on 13 of its 18 attempts.

Hersey (6-6) next faces Plainfield East at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday.
