Elgin man charged with 6th DUI

An Elgin man faces a minimum of six years in prison after his latest DUI arrest over the weekend in East Dundee, according to police and court records.

Joseph P. McGreevy, 49, of the 800 block of Cedar Avenue, was charged with his sixth DUI and driving while his license was revoked for at least the fourth time, both felonies, after a traffic stop Saturday night, according to Kane County court records.

East Dundee Police Chief Terry Mee said McGreevy was in the northbound lanes of Route 25 at 11:47 p.m. waiting to turn left onto Route 72 but failed to pull forward in his 2006 gray Ford Escape when the arrow turned green.

"He was first in line," Mee said.

The driver behind McGreevy began to honk, which drew the attention of an East Dundee officer, who saw that McGreevy's vehicle was not completely in the actual turn lane, Mee said.

After a traffic stop, the officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol on McGreevy, who also admitted drinking, Mee said.

McGreevy refused to do field sobriety tests or a breath test and was arrested, Mee said.

According to court records, McGreevy was sentenced to three years in prison in spring 2014 after pleading guilty to felony aggravated DUI from an April 2013 arrest in Gilberts.

Under state law, he was required to serve only half that sentence and was released from prison, but he was on parole through May 2016, records show.

Information about McGreevy's other previous four DUI arrests was not immediately available.

McGreevy is next due in court Jan. 15.

The most severe charge against him carries a prison term ranging from six to 30 years with no option for probation.

McGreevy was being held at the Kane County jail on $150,000 bail, meaning he must post $15,000 to be released while the case is pending.
