We heard the squirrel gnawing on the walnut before we saw it. A rise in the trail at that point made it appear that we are almost at eye level. I liked that this happenstance encounter turned into a brief staredown between us before it scampered safely away with the prized nut. But what I liked more than that was that I took its squirrely, wintry portrait before the getaway. This was taken on the trail around Sterling Pond during a light snow at our favorite hiking location, the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, using a Nikon Coolpix 820; settings f/5.8, 1/60 sec. and ISO 640. Rick Lingle of Lombard
A display of ceramic bunnies in one of the windows at an Easter brunch in Northbrook. Jim Huskey of Libertyville
After the first snow of the season, a little bird tries to warm up in the early morning sunlight at the Japanese Garden of the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe at the end of November. Nicole Dicop-Hineline of Gurnee
The Chicago skyline as seen from the 95th floor of the John Hancock Building on December 5th. Don Miller of Antioch
The photo was taken December 6th, I was in Lilly lake IL at a tree farm when I saw the opportunity for a good photo! I didn't have my camera with so I used my phone (which is an LG G3) and took the photo quickly. It had come out way better than I had thought with the exception for my thumb in the top right corner (which I cropped out). I really like the amount of contrast that is in the photo and how it shows open fields off a cracked road. I think it also proved that the best camera out there is the one you have on you! Jacek Kulak of Naperville
The photo was taken at Northside Park in Wheaton. The black and white picture was flipped upside down and actually shot during the day. Dan DeWitt of Wheaton
I took this shot last Tuesday during the early morning snow. My running buddies were the first to leave foot prints in the snow as they ran under the streetlight. Bob Williams of Huntley
I took this picture on December 9th at the water feature on the 15th hole of the Whisper Creek Golf Course in Huntley.I was impressed by the deep colors in the sky from the impressive sun set and the perfect reflection of the mature oak trees on the surface of the water. Klaus Pohlschmidt of Huntley
While visiting Florida this past Thanksgiving, my daughter Jen decided to try out a new water sport! She had an amazing experience Flyboarding off Captiva Island! As she flew above the water, she truly felt like a superhero, just like Iron Man! Kathy Jordan of Campton Hills
