Prospect, BG set for consolation semi matchup at Wheeling
Prospect's boys basketball team overcame a sluggish start to earn a 58-47 victory against Vernon Hills in consolation bracket play at Wheeling on Tuesday.
The Cougars held Prospect to 5 points in the first quarter, but the Knights bounced back with a 19-point second-quarter burst to regained the lead at 24-10 heading into the half.
The Knights maintained control, outscoring Vernon Hills in both of the final two periods.
Frankie Mack led all scorers with 19 points after a 7-for-10 shooting effort from the field and a 5-for-6 effort at the foul line.
Antonio Gardner finished with 10 points to go with rebounds and 3 assists, and Patrick Szuba keyed a 35-15 rebounding edge in favor of Prospect (6-5) by getting a game-high 14 boards. Szuba also had a game-high 6 assists.
Vernon Hills (6-6) got 16 points from Tanner Tolari, who made four 3s.
The Knights advance to a matchup against Buffalo Grove at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday in the consolation bracket semifinals.
Buffalo Grove 56, Dundee-Crown 28: The Bison shot 11-for-22 from 2-point range and also made eight 3s to earn a spot in the consolation semifinals at Wheeling.
Jack Vaselaney scored a game-high 11 points and had three 3s for the Bison (4-7). Colin Dekorsi and Hans Haller both scored 7 points, and Mac Camardo had a game-high 11 boards in leading BG to a 28-16 edge in rebounding.
The high scorer for Dundee-Crown was Daniel Dickson with 6 points.
Wheeling 50, Maine West 39: Nick Janulis produced a game-high 15 points and also had 6 rebounds to help the Wildcats to a consolation bracket victory.
Patrick Szpir came up with 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (4-8). T.J. Best scored 9 points for Wheeling, and Jalen Dennis and Szpir both had 6.
Julian Dones led Maine West (2-8) with 13 points; he made three 3s.
Wheeling advances to face Glenbrook South in Wednesday's 2 p.m. consolation semi. The Titans advanced by topping Streamwood 63-56 behind a 17-point effort from senior forward Jim Martinelli.
Maine West faces Streamwood in Wednesday's 10:30 a.m. matchup.
Barrington 74, Corliss 39: Ben Weber made six 3s and finished with a game- and season-high 23 points to help the Broncos finish pool play with a 3-0 record and earn a spot in a championship semifinal play Wednesday.
Will Reinhard had 12 points for the Broncos (8-5), who held Corliss to 6 points in the first quarter and have won three straight.
Barrington meets Rockford Boylan at 6 p.m. Wednesday, while Jacobs faces Zion-Benton in the subsequent semifinal.
