Fremd teams up for big opening win at Wheeling

Fremd's boys basketball team made its debut at Wheeling's Hardwood Classic a winner, in true team fashion.

No one scored in double figures for the Vikings (10-2), but a total of 12 players dented the scoring column in a 53-25 victory over Streamwood.

Fremd advances to a second-round winner's bracket game against Libertyville at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. The Wildcats advanced by edging Glenbrook South 71-68.

Against Streamwood, Kyle Sliwa and Patrick Benka led the way with 9 points apiece. Samson Oladimeji had 8 points and 6 rebounds as the Vikings out-rebounded the Sabres 29-13.

Brian Dompke contributed team bests of 8 rebounds and 4 assists as Fremd shot 18-for-34 from the field and forced Streamwood into 10-for-27 from 2-point range and 0-for-11 from 3.

• Buffalo Grove fell short against Waukegan 69-52 in its first-rounder at Wheeling.

Jack Vaselaney scored a team-high 10 points for the Bison, and Colin Dekorsi and Colin Calcagno had 6 apiece.

Waukegan's Carson Newsome led all scorers with 17 points, and the Bulldogs' DeShawn Davidson (14) and Ja'Dyn Brown (10) also scored in double figures.

Waukegan shot 23-for-28 at the foul line, while BG was 6-for-10.

Buffalo Grove (3-7), which has lost five straight, meets Dundee-Crown in the consolation bracket at 9 a.m. Tuesday; Waukegan gets a second-round championship bracket matchup against Notre Dame.

• Behind Jorden Thornton's game-high 23 points, the Hawks (4-7) opened with a 67-51 win over Leyden in the White Pool of the Glenbard West Holiday Classic.

A 32-15 lead at the half powered Hoffman Estates to a comfortable gap throughout the second half. Thornton hit three of his five 3-pointers and scored 12 of his points in the third quarter.

Brandon Hall added 11 points while Marshall Davis and Konrad Kieruzal each had 10 points. DeAndre Williams led Leyden (3-6) with 12 points. JoQuil Meeks scored 9 of his 11 points in the third quarter.

Hoffman Estates faces Wheaton Academy in second-round tournament play on Tuesday while Leyden plays Glenbard North.
