Holiday Lights Contest: Mount Prospect home wins editors' pick in Northwest suburbs

Greg Mulcahy of 14145 Sauk Lane in Mount Prospect Sauk Lane in Mount Prospect has been chosen by editors as the Northwest suburban winner of the Daily Herald Holiday Lights contest.

The overall contest winner, chosen by online voting, is Dante Fiandaca of Algonquin.

Q. How long have you been decorating your house like this?

A. We've been here for 20 years and have done this every year. It gets bigger and bigger every year.

Q. What inspired you to go all-out with your decorations?

A. I moved here from the city and we had no room there for decorations. It's not just lights. Everything has been built by me.

Q. How many hours does it take to put up the display?

A. I start the week before Thanksgiving to beat the weather. The whole thing takes three to four full days to set up.

Q. How much does your electric bill spike in December?

A. My electric bill will double in December. I switched to LED lights so that should help lower it.

Q. What do your neighbors think of your display?

A. We've got a little competition in the neighborhood. It's a fun rivalry. The whole block participates.
