Birches' back to back Christmas parties spread extra Christmas cheer

The Birches Assisted Living in Clarendon Hills got into the Christmas spirit early this year with back to back Christmas parties on December 15 and 16. Both parties featured popular local entertainers, visits from Santa and Christmas treats.

On December 15, The Birches hosted a Christmas celebration for the whole community. The Birches' Maintenance Director Bob Bickert dressed up as Santa and passed out presents to residents with help from Activities Assistants Ellie Orozco and Nai Cooks, who dressed up as his elves.

Residents then settled in for a performance from Soundz of Time with Jan and Gino, a local vocal duo that plays a variety of classic music, including 1940's swing, smooth jazz, oldies, country, classic rock, Latin rock and hits from the 70's and 80's. For this performance, of course, they relied on their large repertoire of Christmas classics.

"Jan and Gino are so much fun," said Birches' Activities Director Katie Klitchman. "They make everyone want to sing and dance and just enjoy themselves. This year they really got everyone into the Christmas spirit."

On December 16, Encore, The Birches' memory care neighborhood, had a special party for its residents that included another visit from Santa and a performance from Chicago-based crooner Peter Oprisko. After snacking on Christmas cookies and hot chocolate, residents watched Oprisko perform a combination of holiday classics and pop standards.

Accompanied by piano, Oprisko belted out old Christmas favorites in a baritone reminiscent of Frank Sinatra. As he performed, Oprisko interacted with the audience, wishing them a merry Christmas, shaking their hands and serenading them with his soulful singing style. Oprisko also included musical history, holiday trivia and lighthearted humor in his performance, which kept residents entertained in between songs.

"Peter Oprisko has a warm, classic style that residents love," said Birches Executive Director Jackie Foss. "They look forward to his performance every year. It's one of the highlights of the holiday season here at The Birches."
