State police write 696 citations in Cook County in late November

The Illinois State Police made 696 citations/arrests and 142 written warnings to drivers in Cook County from Nov. 13 to Nov. 29, the agency reports. The Special Traffic Enforcement Patrols resulted in 106 seat belt citations, 420 speeding citations and 11 arrests for either drug or alcohol violations and driving under the influence. The STEP program is a combination of increased enforcement and community education designed to raise public awareness of the dangers of speeding, failure to wear a safety belt and impaired driving, and is funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety.
