Fremont Middle School students collect food for pantry

Students at Fremont Middle School helped the less fortunate Tuesday by donating nearly 1,300 pounds of food to the Fremont Township Food Pantry.

Eighth-graders carried in the 1,292 pounds of nonperishable food items they collected and placed them in the center of the gymnasium during a school assembly.

"I think sometimes we get tied up with our own lives and we don't see not only what other people deal with but how we can help," Spanish teacher Adam Lang said.

Sixth-graders loaded the items onto a Fremont Township Food Pantry truck after the assembly.

"The food goes a long way to help feed the working poor in the township," Fremont Township Supervisor Diana O'Kelly said. "We feed about 1,000 people a year from the Fremont Township Food Pantry. The students' efforts are vitally appreciated. Many of our patrons are paying rent and electric with their paychecks and don't have much money left over to feed their families." This is the second year the school has held the food drive. Students collected 1,800 pounds of food in 2014.
