Glenbard North librarian brings opera to students

Thanks to a grant and a school librarian's love of history, music and expanding students' horizons, Glenbard High School District 87 students are the first in Illinois to be part of the New York Metropolitan Opera HD Live in Schools Program.

Glenbard North High School head librarian Nancy Pierce received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to study the history and culture of Mozart's "worlds" in Vienna last summer with 24 other educators from across the country. There, Pierce met people involved with the Met's schools program.

In October, she spent three days in New York, attending workshops at the Met, going behind the scenes, meeting performers and attending an opera. She is the only educator in Illinois to have this opportunity, and only 40 districts nationally were chosen for the program, which provides free tickets for students to attend screenings of operas streamed live at local HD theaters.

On Saturday, Dec. 12, Glenbard North students will attend the Met production of Mozart's "The Magic Flute."
