Shield, Bauer share in collegiate football achievement

Former Lake Zurich teammates Mike Shield and Jerry Bauer received postseason honors for their respective football teams this fall.

Shield, a linebacker at Rhodes College, was named the Southern Athletic Association's defensive player of the year.

He capped an outstanding career for the Lynx, collecting 86 tackles this past fall, fifth-most in the league.

Shield's 8.6 tackles per contest rate also ranked fifth in the SAA while his 42 assists were fourth-best. He has 13.0 tackles for loss (fourth in the SAA). He also posted a variety of game-changing plays including 2.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and an interception on the season.

His biggest game of the season came in a huge win over Birmingham-Southern, where Shield finished with 15 tackles, a sack, an interception, a forced fumble, and three quarterback hurries.

Bauer, a junior offensive lineman for Washington University in St. Louis, received first-team honors on the University Athletic Association all-conference team.

He helped Washington claim a share of the UAA championship and retained possession of the Founders Cup with a 37-23 victory against the University of Chicago.

Bauer was a three-year letter winner at Lake Zurich when the Bears were three-time North Suburban Conference champions.

His sisters Lydia and Audrey played basketball at Lake Zurich and went on to play at UW-Green Bay and Navy, respectively.

Their mother Rachel coached the Wheeling girls basketball team from 1997 to 2004.

Bauer and Shield met on the football field for the final time on Oct. 10, when Washington defeated Rhode Island 37-7 in St. Louis.
