Charges coming in crash that killed Aurora man

A pair of drag racers will face charges in connection with a Friday night crash that killed a 49-year-old Aurora man and seriously injured his 15-year-old daughter, authorities said Monday.

Charles D. Siebel Jr. was pronounced dead at roughly 3 a.m. Monday at Rush Copley Medical Center where he was taken for treatment after the crash at Eola Road and Shenandoah Drive in the Will County portion of Aurora, police said.

Siebel was driving his 2004 Toyota Highlander east on Shenandoah around 10:15 p.m. and stopped at the stop sign at Eola Road.

He then attempted to turn north on Eola when he was hit by a 2011 Dodge Charger that was heading south on Eola and apparently driving extremely fast, authorities said.

It appears the other driver, a 16-year-old Aurora boy, was drag racing with a 20-year-old Plainfield man who was driving a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix. The driver of the Grand Prix, who was just south of the other two vehicles at the time of the crash, hit the center median on Eola and ended up in the northbound lanes.

Both Siebel and his daughter had to be extricated by Aurora firefighters. The girl is being treated for serious, but nonlife-threatening injuries.

The 16-year-old suffered minor injuries in the crash and the 20-year-old refused medical treatment. Charges are pending against both, police said.
