America still has far to go on race

The Daily Herald is to be congratulated on its thought-provoking and timely editorial Nov. 27 on the shooting death of Laquan McDonald by the Chicago police in 2014.

For far too long most of white America has chosen to ignore or deny the fact that our society is suffering from institutionalized racism and white privilege.

Fifty years after the passage of the Civil Rights Act, this nation still has not dealt with the reality that for so many minorities, our society is deeply unjust and flawed.

If we are ever to make Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a Dream" speech a reality, we must all commit to addressing and solving this societal tragedy.
