District 211 and 214 students celebrate Chinese culture

To celebrate what they have learned in their Mandarin classes, students from two area school districts are coming together for the third Chinese Student Cultural Performance from 7 to 8:20 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, in Rolling Meadows High School's Theater, 2901 W. Central Road. The event is free and open to the public.

Students from Palatine Schaumburg High School District 211 and Northwest Suburban High School District 214 will perform lion and dragon dances, songs, Tai Chi, Yo-yo, skits and music.

Mandarin Chinese has been taught for several years in both school districts, and the show is an opportunity to expose others to the language and culture, according to George Kang, the show's organizer and a Mandarin teacher at Prospect and Rolling Meadows high schools.

"This show will not only showcase what our students have learned, but it will promote the Chinese culture to community members and future Mandarin learners in a more relaxed atmosphere," Kang said. "Also, an added benefit to current Mandarin students is that they will be engaged in hands-on activities that are directly tied to the AP Chinese exam."

Student performers are from Conant, Prospect, Rolling Meadows and Schaumburg high schools.
