Local Boy Scout builds rain garden in Campton Township

Eagle Scout candidate Stephen Richmann from Boy Scout Troop 13 in St. Charles completed his Eagle project at Anderson Park in Campton Township.

Stephen's project was planning and installing a rain garden with native plants. A rain garden is an attractive, eco-friendly installation. Rain gardens consist of native vegetation planted in a depression in the ground to filter and absorb excess runoff water. The project consisted of raising funds and soliciting donations, researching, choosing, and planting native plants, building and installing a bench, and installing an informational sign.

"My favorite part of the project was absolutely installing the garden itself. It was very fulfilling to see a year of preparation finally come to fruition, with many people coming to help me," Stephen said. He added that the most challenging part of the project was communicating with different organizations and managing his time during a busy school year.

Stephen stated, "I learned the importance of clear communication. I was in contact with five different organizations at various stages of the project. I was forced to learn how to balance my schedule and prioritize things. Of everything that I gained during the project, this is probably what will serve me the most."
