Williams' big shot keys Hoffman Estates past Prospect

In one of the most dramatic games of the night, Hoffman Estates prevailed 49-42 in overtime over visiting Prospect on Tuesday in the Mid-Suburban League girls basketball crossover.

The game was tied at 42 in OT when 5-foot-5 sophomore guard Tayler Williams hit a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left to start a 7-0 rally to end the game.

Senior Erin Hanson and Williams each had 2 free throws apiece in the final 30 seconds to close out the scoring.

"Everyone chipped in," said Hoffman coach Mike Koester. "And we played with good composure in the overtime."

Hoffman (3-3) outscored Prospect 11-4 in the OT with senior Jenny Nailor and junior Monraia Wilson scoring the Hawks' first two buckets of the extra session.

Nailor finished with a game-high 14 points (two 3-pointers), followed by Hanson (one 3-pointer) with 13 points. Williams and Wilson had 7 apiece with one 3-pointer.

Prospect (4-3) was led by seniors Clare O'Carroll (11 points), Brenda Kendziera (10) and Angela Roman (9).

Hersey 45, Barrington 39: On a night where Hersey's offense wasn't as explosive as usual, 5-foot-11 sophomore Erin McGrath created some fireworks on the boards.

She turned in the Huskies' first double-digit rebounding effort of the season with 10, while also scoring 6 points before fouling out.

"Erin always got herself to the right spot and I think she was the difference in the game," said Hersey coach Mary Fendley. "We kind of had a hard time with our offense but Erin really made a difference with her rebounding and putbacks."

Junior Claire Gritt led Hersey (6-0) with 17 points while junior Maggie Berigan added 14. Gina Miklasz added 6.

"Maggie had a nice game, too, offensively," Fendley said. "But Erin really saved the day. Her rebounding allowed us to win the game."

Abigail Elo (13 points, 4 rebounds), Megan Talbot (11 points, 9 rebounds) and Alex Van Ryne (7 points) were top scorers for the Fillies (2-4), who received 3 steals from Kelly Katis.

"Abigail Elo had some big baskets for us and Megan played a steady game," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "I liked a lot of things about this game except the final score."

Barreiro was especially pleased with her team's defense.

"And I thought we handled their pressure well," she said. "Hersey is a very good team and I liked how we competed. We had some untimely mistakes but that's going to happen. After having such a poor performance in our last game (a 76-49 loss to Mother McAuley on Saturday), I liked how we came back this game."

Rolling Meadows 36, Conant 15: The Mustangs (5-2) held host Conant to one basket and 2 free throws in the second half of the MSL crossover.

Junior forward Katherine Nolan (11 points) and sophomore guard Melissa Spiwak (6) led the Mustangs' offense. Kelsey Nallon and Megan King each had 3-pointers for Meadows.

Conant (2-4) was led by junior guard Jorie Wachal's 7 points. Sophomore Cate Fitzgerald, senior Karlie Heneghan and Wachal each had a 3-pointer.

Buffalo Grove 57, Schaumburg 25: The MSL crossover was tied at 17 when Buffalo Grove went on a 13-1 run to end the half and 40-8 rally to complete the game.

"We played great defense," said Bison coach Steve Kolodziej, whose team (4-2) has held three teams to under 34 points this season. "We were able to get a lot of turnovers."

Senior Sammy Stejskal led BG with 18 points (two 3-pointers) while Natali Dimitrova had 12. Maddie Welter (one 3-pointer) and Georgette Topalis (two 3-pointers) each chipped in 7 points.

Juniors Laura O'Connell (8 points) and Mallory Gerber (7) led Schaumburg (3-3).

Fremd 78, Elk Grove 36: Brianna Lewis (17 points, 3 assists), Haley Williams (9 points, three-pointers), Julia Wacker (9 points, 10 rebounds) and Grace Trowek (8 points, 7 rebounds, two 3-pointers) were the scoring leaders for host Fremd (7-0).
