Fort Wayne building portable ice rink to replace pond

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Fort Wayne officials may have closed a popular ice skating pond. But that doesn't mean they are doing away with the wintertime activity altogether.

WANE-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1MRE95V) that crews on Monday started constructing a portable ice rink that will sit on top of a paved basketball court at Lakeside Park.

So far, the rink's boards have been put in place. The city will install a liner at a later time and eventually fill the rink with 4-6 inches of water once temperatures fall below freezing.

Last winter, the city's Parks and Recreation Department closed several skating ponds, including the one in Lakeside Park, because ice was too thin.
