Thousands turn out to honor 5-year-old Chad Carr, family

SALINE, Mich. (AP) - Thousands of people, including University of Michigan football players, have attended a memorial service for the 5-year-old grandson of former coach Lloyd Carr.

The family asked the public to wear orange, Chad Carr's favorite color. The service was held Sunday at Saline High School, six days after Chad's death from an incurable brain cancer.

Lloyd Carr says he'd been amazed by the "goodness ... in this world," a reference to the support given to the family over the last year. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been donated to pediatric cancer research.

Some Michigan players served as ushers. They've played with "#ChadTough" written on their helmets, a message also displayed by Michigan State and Ohio State.

Chad's father, Jason Carr, and grandfather, Tom Curtis, played for Michigan.
