Statement game for Fremd as Vikes win in Wisconsin

After pocketing five wins in Illinois, Fremd girls basketball team left the state to earn victory No. 6 in Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon at the Brookfield Central High school Shootout.

The Vikings kept their record perfect at 6-0 with a 59-45 victory over Arrowhead High School (Wis.) as Northwestern recruit Bryana Hopkins and Texas Southern-bound Brianna Lewis both scored 16 points.

"Brianna (5 assists) and Bryana (7 rebounds) played at a very high level," said Fremd coach Dave Yates. "It was the best 'team' game as far as our whole team coming to play for an entire game. It was a great experience for our team and we are very honored to be invited."

Harvard recruit Grace Tworek led the Vikes with 14 rebounds and 5 blocks shots. She also had 2 steals.

"Grace had an amazing game on the defensive side," Yates said. "She dominated the glass and redirected another 5 shots other than the ones that she blocked."

Maryville-bound Erin Lenahan collected 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Missy Adrian and Julia Wacker each pulled down 5 rebounds.

"It was a very good win against a very good team and program," Yates added. "They had very good size and played very hard. It was a very good challenge for our kids.

"To sit on a bus for nearly two hours and then play, I was very impressed with our players ability to get going right away."

Arrowhead was led by junior guard Liz Erdman's 14 points, including three 3-pointers.

"Arrowhead is a very good shooting team and I thought we gave them very limited looks," Yates said. "Our size bothers everyone, and I think it bothered them."

Rolling Meadows 52, Oak Creek (Wis.) 43: Kyra Spiwak (15 points), Katherine Nolan (11), Morgan Campagna (11) and Megan King (9) led the Mustangs (4-2) at the Brookfield Central Shootout in Wisconsin.

Meadows had four 3-pointers in the game, including three from King. Campagna led on the boards with 15 rebounds.

"It was a great weekend for our kids," said BG coach Ryan Kirkorsky. "It was fun to measure up against a top program from out of state.

"I thought our three posts (Campagna, Mickey, and Nolan) were phenomenal. Campagna was tough on the boards, and Nolan played one of the best games of her career. Now we have to prepare ourselves for Mid-Suburban League play."

Buffalo Grove 70, Libertyville 47: Senior Maddie Welter (game-high 21 points), junior Georgette Topalis (13), senior Sammy Stejskal (12) and senior Natali Dimitrova (9) led host Buffalo Grove in its final game of its own Bison Classic.

BG finished with a 3-2 record, losing only to champion Hersey and runner-up Rich East.

"We played hard physically," said Bison coach Steve Kolodziej. "We had some mental lapses in the tournament but in this final game we hit our assignments and executed well. We created turnovers and that defense sparked our offense."

The 70 points were a season high as were the 13 points for Topalis.

"We had some juniors step up," Kolodziej added. "Georgette (Topalis) played great in the tournament and Megan (Gamber) stepped up. The tournament certainly gets us ready for conference."

Topalis had two 3-pointers and converted 5 free throws.

But she preferred to focus on other side of the floor.

"I thought it was a pretty good tournament for us defensively," said the junior guard who was named to the all-tournament team along with Stejskal.

Gamber was in agreement with her classmate.

"Our defense really triggered how we played offensively," she added.

Mother McCauley 76, Barrington 49: Alex Van Ryne scored a season -high 18 points for the Fillies, who finished the Bison Classic with a 2-3 record.

Antioch 51, Wheeling 31: Juniors Melissa Claver (14 points) and Shannon Kennedy (11) led Wheeling (3-3), which finished with a 3-2 record at the Niles North Thanksgiving tournament. Kennedy had a pair of 3-pointers.

York 49, Prospect 33: Prospect was led by Nikki Matters (10 points) and Angela Roman (8) in its final game of the York Thanksgiving tournament where the Knights (4-2) finished 3-2. Matters had two 3-pointers while teammate Angela Villasin had one.

Hoffman Estates 67, Lake Park 50: Hoffman Estates (2-3) won its final game of its own round-robin tournament as junior Monraia Wilson scored a season-high 26 points with four 3-pointers.

Jenny Nailor added 16 for the Hawks and Tayler Williams 15 as coach Mike Koester played all 11 girls.

Hampshire 47, Maine West 35: Freshman Rachel Kent led Maine West with 12 points as the Warriors (4-2) finished 3-2 in the Hoffman Estates Thanksgiving tournament.

Jordan Hart and Liz Sanchez each had a 3-pointer for West.
