Prospect Heights names its officer of the year

Prospect Heights police Sgt. James Zawlocki, a member of the city's force since it was created in 1990, has been named this year's Police Officer of the Year.

In addition to serving as a patrol sergeant, Zawlocki is the department's primary traffic accident investigator and a Prospect Heights Citizen Police Academy instructor. He also oversees the city's tobacco enforcement efforts and has helped raise money for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

"Sergeant Zawlocki's outstanding work ethic and attention to detail help to make this year's Officer of the Year an easy decision," Police Chief Jamie Dunne said in an announcement of the award this week. "Sergeant Zawlocki is a veteran supervisor who is outstanding mentoring junior officers, has great relations with citizens of Prospect Heights and is respected by his peers in the law enforcement community."

Zawlocki, who's organized Neighborhood Watch groups and community policing events, spends some of his off-duty time coaching youth sports.
