Cubs pick up lefty reliever Brothers in trade with Rockies
After the Colorado Rockies decided to clean house, the Cubs decided to pick up one of the pieces on Wednesday.
Cubs officials announced they have acquired left-handed reliever Rex Brothers from the Rockies for 18-year-old minor league lefthander Wander Cabrera.
After a standout season in 2013, Brothers struggled a bit over the next two seasons. The 28-year-old pitcher is 16-11 with 61 holds, 20 saves and a 3.42 ERA in 286 major league appearances over the last five seasons with Colorado.
In 2013, Brothers collected 19 saves for the Rockies and posted a 1.74 ERA (13 ER/67.1 IP) in 72 appearances.
Last week Brothers was designated for assignment as the Rockies cleared four players off their roster to open spots for minor leaguers.
Cabrera (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) went 4-3 with a 2.34 ERA (11 ER/42.1 IP) in 14 appearances (seven starts) in his first season with the Cubs' Dominican Summer League team.
Brothers is the fourth pitcher the Cubs have added to their bullpen in the last week.
