Reason to celebrate as Antioch handles Fenwick

Officially, there were 24 white-stemmed roses handed to Sandy Borries.

And one red rose, to Tim Borries. It was on account of their 25th wedding anniversary.

Of course, Tim is the Antioch girls basketball head coach, so he had to work late on Tuesday night. And he didn't seem to mind. The Antioch basketball team invited one of the state's most successful programs in Fenwick.

One interesting part of the game involved Antioch's Reiser twins, Amy and Ashley, and their honest chance at combining to outscore the Friars' entire team.

It looked good at halftime.

True, the Friars (1-2) shot the ball better in the second half. No matter, unbeaten Antioch (4-0) earned a signature win of the early season with a convincing 72-44 rout of this storied program.

Amy Reiser scored the first 6 points for her club and Antioch led Fenwick 10-5 after the first quarter.

"I know we lost to them by 2 points last year,'' Amy Reiser said. "We wanted to get some redemption."

This game was part of the Niles North Tournament.

"We played at Fenwick last year and it took us 3 hours to get there,'' Borries said. "We knew they were a little down from last year but we didn't want to have a letdown. They are still one of the best programs in the state."

While Ashley Reiser battled some early foul trouble, Amy had no problem finding the basket. She had 16 points by halftime and the Sequoits only trailed the visitors by a single basket.

Ashley Reiser stepped up her game in the second half. She had 10 of her 14 points in the third quarter.

"This is a big win,'' Ashley Reiser said. "I love our team. We are really stepping up. We have the potential to be really good. We just have to continue to work hard."

Even though this game was clearly one-sided, Antioch might have touched 100 points if their long-distance shots had fallen more often.

"We just couldn't hit our shots,'' Ashley Reiser said. "That's why it was so important to step up defensively."

And some fancy shots did find their way into the hoop.

Ashley Reiser landed her 3-pointer with the help of gravity. It bounced in the air and into the net. Teammate Megan Kelly banked in a 3-pointer from the corner.

Borries was able to clear his bench in the latter moments of the game. Kelly finished with 7 points. Fenwick had a better second half as Kate Moore landed 3 3-pointers and had 14 points for the Friars.
