Fremd turns back a determined run from Rolling Meadows

Tuesday's Turkey Thriller game at Lake Zurich High School had a unique twist.

It featured the last three Class 4A state runner-up teams - Rolling Meadows (2013 and 2014) and Fremd (2015).

Three-time defending Mid-Suburban League champ Fremd rallied from an 18-13 deficit at half for a 47-38 victory to remain perfect at 4-0 while Rolling Meadows evened its record at 2-2.

"I was pleased to see us bounce back in the second half after a really poor first half," said Fremd coach Dave Yates.

The game was tied at 4-4 after one quarter.

"We really struggled to put the ball in the basket in the first half and it snowballed," Yates said. "We probably missed 7-10 shots around the rim. We were getting good looks. Credit Meadows for being responsible for some of that, but with our size and talent, we need to own that."

Fremd outscored Meadows 21-9 in the third quarter.

"I was very pleased with how we responded in the third quarter," Yates said. "We stuck some 3-pointers and executed much better on offense."

Senior Briana Hopkins led Fremd with 17 points while Grace Tworek added 9 and Brianna Lewis 7.

"Bri Hopkins played a great second half and hit some big shots," Yates said. "Grace Tworek hit a big 3 to get things rolling in the second quarter."

Midori Williams and Amanda McCartney hit 3-pointers in the second half to extend the lead. Hopkins and Tworek both finished with 7 rebounds while teammate Erin Lenahan had 6.

"I thought Erin Lenahan and Brianna Lewis played excellent defense on Kyra Spiwak (Meadows' all-area guard)," Yates said. "Through three quarters they limited her to three field goals and no trips to the foul line."

The Mustangs were led by Spiwak (17 points) and Hannah Mickey (12).

"Rolling Meadows is a very good team," Yates added. "To hold them under 40 is something I am very pleased with. Ryan does a great job and had his kids ready to go to start that game. We are glad it is a four-quarter game.

"We were expecting a test and got one. We have much to improve on but should be proud of how we won despite not playing our best game."

Wheeling 37, Resurrection 27: Wheeling coach Matt Webber could not have been more proud of his Wildcats' defensive effort in the third round of the Niles North Thanksgiving Tournament on Tuesday.

Limiting Resurrection to under double digits in three of the four quarters, the Wildcats improved to 2-1 in the tournament and 2-2 overall.

Melissa Claver led the Wildcats with 12 points followed by Coco Yoshino (7 points, one 3-pointer), Nansy Velev (6 points, one 3-pointer) and Shannon Kennedy (5 points, two 3-pointers).

"We're getting better every game," Webber said. "That's what the game is all about."

Hersey 70, Grayslake Central 25: Host Hersey improved to 3-0 in the Bison Classic as junior guard Claire Gritt scored a game-high 26 points in the first three quarters when she also made 8-of-9 free throws. Gritt also collected 7 rebounds.

Maggie Berigan chipped in 11 points, followed by Gina Miklasz (7) and Kelly Weyhrich (6).

Erin McGrath also had 7 rebounds for the Huskies who led 27-2 after one quarter.

Schaumburg 51, St. Charles East 42: Junior Mallory Gerber scored a season-high 22 points, one shy of her career-high, as the Saxons improved to 2-1 in their own tournament.

Gerber had four 3-pointers while teammate Laura O'Connell had one while adding 15 points.

Maye Bowens and Lexi Ross each chipped in 5 points for Schaumburg.

Huntley 46, Palatine 36: Senior Carrissa Multon (7 points), senior Cora Jacobsen (6) and freshman Elena Porrata (6) led the Pirates in the fourth round of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament.

Jacobsen had the Pirates' only 3-pointer.

Crystal Lake South 56, St. Viator 41: Senior guard Julia Bergstrom (12 points, two 3-pointers) was the scorer for St. Viator (2-2) in the fourth-round game of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament.

Lyons 43, Leyden 24: Lyons topped the Eagles (2-1) at the Addison Trail/Fenton Tournament.
