South Elgin church offers an extra hour of sleep during holidays

The holidays are such a busy time, that a South Elgin church has decided to offer an extra hour to sleep.

Sunday services that are usually at 9 a.m. will be changed to 10 a.m. for the six weeks between Thanksgiving and until the first week after New Year's at South Elgin Community United Methodist Church, 400 W. Spring St. (one block west of Route 31 on Spring Street).

"We're a great church and we want more people to come visit us and get to know us," said the Rev. Jan Comerford. Church members thought pushing back the time of service might help young families get their children up and ready to get to church on time, as well as help people who have trouble getting out early in the morning to be able to make it out to church an hour later.

The church will be all decorated for the holiday season and special music is being planned.

Christmas Eve candlelight service will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 24 and feature a live baby in a manger lined with straw by youngsters at the service.

This church on Spring Street was established in 1892 and has been welcoming people from the community to come and worship God in a friendly and inviting manner since that time. Communion is the first Sunday of the month and all are welcome to take communion.
