Officials: West Chicago shooting victim had gang ties

A 27-year-old man shot to death late Friday night near West Chicago was a documented gang member, authorities said.

The DuPage County sheriff's office said the shooting was an isolated crime and the victim, Enrique Hernandez of West Chicago, was targeted. The ongoing homicide investigation includes an effort to find Hernandez's silver 2007 Chevrolet Aveo. The Illinois registration on the 4-door car is R614016.

Police said they received a call of a person lying on the side of the road at the intersection of Highlake and DuPage avenues around 11 p.m. Friday. Hernandez was taken to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, where he was pronounced dead.

DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen said Hernandez died from a gunshot wound to the head.
