Former nursing home employee charged in battery of patient

GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) - A former Galesburg nursing home employee faces a battery charge stemming from the death of an elderly nursing home patient.

Twenty-five-year-old Claude Richard Shinall of Galesburg appeared in court Friday on one count of aggravated battery of a senior citizen. His bond was set at $150,000, but Shinall is scheduled Tuesday to be back in court for a preliminary hearing and a bond reduction hearing.

It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Knox County State's Attorney John Pepmeyer says the victim was taken to a hospital Oct. 10 with injuries to his face and neck that suggested he was attacked in the face and choked around his neck.

The Galesburg Register-Mail reports (http://bit.ly/1I3GWtN ) that the man died several weeks later.
