Oven fire causes $50,000 in damage at Vernon Hills home

An oven fire caused about $50,000 in damage to a Vernon Hills house Saturday, leaving the structure uninhabitable, fire officials said.

Fire crews found fire and heavy smoke in the kitchen area when they arrived to the two-story multifamily home in the 900 block of Ann Arbor Lane, according to a news release from the Countryside Fire Protection District. The fire was under control within 15 minutes and was out by 4 p.m., officials said.

The fire was contained to the kitchen of one unit, authorities said.

A smoke detector alerted a resident to the fire, which occurred while something was cooking, officials said. All residents had evacuated the house safely by the time fire crews arrived.

The Lincolnshire Riverwoods Fire Protection District and the Mundelein, Libertyville and Knollwood fire departments assisted at the scene.
