Trinity President Dockery elected to ETS leadership

Deerfield, Ill. - The Evangelical Theological Society elected Trinity International University President David S. Dockery as its vice president this week at the organization's annual meeting in Atlanta.

Traditionally, the newly elected vice president also is appointed as ETS program chair for one year and then serves a successive one-year term as ETS president.

"I am genuinely honored by the invitation to serve the evangelical community in this way at this time," Dockery said. "I have long admired the work of the Evangelical Theological Society and those who have provided leadership for this important organization through the years."

Dockery's service continues a longstanding ETS leadership connection with Trinity.

Former Trinity President Kenneth Kantzer (1917-2002) served as ETS president in 1968.

Visiting Professor Carl F.H. Henry (1913-2003) served as ETS president in 1969. Trinity's Carl F.H. Henry Center for Theological Understanding is named in his honor.

Academic Dean and Professor of Old Testament Walt Kaiser was ETS president in 1977.

Dockery has been associated with ETS in various roles since the late 1970s, when he became a student member. He was elected as chair of the Southwest region in the 1980s and as chair of the Southeast region in the 1990s.

He has made presentations at ETS regional and national meetings, including the Plenary Address at the 2001 annual meeting in Colorado Springs. He has published articles and book reviews in the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society.

Frequently chosen to serve in key advisory positions, Dockery has accepted roles on the boards of Christianity Today, The Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, The Manhattan Declaration, and Prison Fellowship Ministries, among many others.

A prolific author and editor, Dockery has written or edited 35 books. He has also contributed articles or chapters to about 50 additional books, including some of the most significant theological reference works of the past two decades.

Dockery became the 15th president of Trinity International University in 2014. He previously served as president of Union University, Jackson, Tenn., and as chief academic officer at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky.
