Palatine run to raise funds for heart testing

The 7th annual Joshua Jared Hardy Memorial 5K run/2-mile walk, Hoofin' 4 Hardy, will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at Birchwood Park and Recreation Center, 435 W. Illinois Ave. in Palatine.

The event raises money to support free testing for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) in local high school students. HCM is a genetic heart condition that causes an excessive thickening of the heart muscle. It is the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest in young people.

Proceeds from Hoofin' 4 Hardy will fund free EKG testing, which screens for HCM, for high school students in the suburbs.

Hoofin' 4 Hardy was created in 2009 after the death of the event namesake, Joshua Jared Hardy, then a 21-year-old student at the University of Illinois.
