St. Alphonsus donates shoes to help adopting couple

The student council of St. Alphonsus Liguori School in Prospect Heights, under the direction of eighth-grade teacher Brett Seick and fourth-grade teacher Ellen McNichols, heard the plea of a family in Minooka and opened their hearts to help.

The student council collected approximately 727 pounds of new and used shoes to help fund an adoption set up by Amy and Nathan Braun.

The Brauns have two children, Caiden and Micah. Nathan is studying to be a pastor and Amy works with children with special needs. They are in the process of adopting a little girl, Faith, from China.

Faith was abandoned in a park when she was 2 months old and left to die in the middle of winter. Faith is missing the part of the brain that connects the two hemispheres. She will need a lot of early intervention therapies and desperately needs an MRI to rule out life-threatening brain abnormalities.

The family is only $9,000 away from having Faith's adoption fully funded. The Brauns have recently partnered with an organization that will give them 40 cents per pound for used shoes that they collect.

Their goal is 9,000 pairs of shoes. The shoes collected will not only help the Brauns adopt Faith, but all shoes will be sent to developing countries in need.
