St. Anne captures first at Scholastic Bowl

On Oct. 27, the Scholastic Bowl Team of St. Anne Parish School of Barrington captured first place at Notre Dame College Prep in Niles. Earlier this month, the St. Anne Cardinals qualified for this 18-team finals competition.

After challenging St. Thecla, St. Edward, St. Mary of the Woods, St. Paul of the Cross and Our Lady of the Wayside, the Cardinals rallied from a 70 point deficit to win.

In the final round, St. Anne prevailed over the undefeated St. Paul of the Cross team, creating a three-way tie. The total points rule was utilized as the tiebreaker between St. Paul of the Cross, Our Lady of the Wayside and St. Anne Parish School. With the highest score, the St. Anne team took first place.

"It was nice to see all of the practice time and dedication pay off at such a key time in a championship match," said team moderator Terry Ehardt.

Team captain Jack Hoppe said, "This is a first for St. Anne School's Scholastic Bowl team. It is the first time we have won at Notre Dame. There were five matches and it was hard to make it through the night. We had a five-man team with five substitutes. We were facing some large schools and I could not be prouder."

The St. Anne team sent to Notre Dame included: Matthew D'Amore, Olek Drobek, Joseph Hargrave, captain Jack Hoppe, Joe Laterza, Kevin McAndrews, Ozy McEvoy, Jack Streeter, Joe Taylor, Henry Wachsman and moderator Terry Ehardt.

Earlier this month, two teams of six traveled to St. Viator for a 12-team competition, finishing in first with a record of 4-0. The Cardinals conquered St. Emily, St. James, St. Paul of the Cross and Our Lady of the Wayside on the way to the championship.

The Scholastic Bowl team sent to St. Viator included Cali Brady, Gaby Cabanelas, Matthew D'Amore, Olek Drobek, captain Jack Hoppe, Joe Laterza, Kevin McAndrews, Hope Niezyniecki, Zofia Stawiarska, Jack Streeter, Henry Wachsman, Sofia Zitella and moderator Terry Ehardt.
