District 70 holds technology conference for teachers

More than 120 teachers from throughout Lake and Cook counties attended the first technology conference hosted by Libertyville School District 70 recently to learn how educational innovators are mastering technology in the classroom.

Topics on incorporating techniques and strategies for teaching and learning ranged from utilizing specific cutting-edge technology tools to explaining ways to connect students to the world with integrating technology into meaningful learning opportunities.

The event, called "The i3 Conference for K-8 Educators - Innovate • Integrate • Influence," was the first of its kind for District 70. It offered professional development hours to kindergarten through eighth-grade teachers that are required to maintain a teaching license.

Educators attended four sessions and could choose from an offering of 40 topics, including Google Apps for Education, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math), iPads, Chromebooks, interactive whiteboards, personal learning networks, and more.

Sessions included hands-on learning, demonstrations, and discussions about relevant tools and pedagogy for students in District 70, as well as surrounding communities. The conference was held the morning of Nov. 14.

"I am always impressed with the commitment shown in District 70 to creating diverse learning opportunities for our students, this offered a perfect example of such a pledge to supporting the teaching and learning of educators, as well," said Superintendent Dr. Guy Schumacher, who opened the conference with his Applications of Learning wheel.

"The technology team did a wonderful job of orchestrating this impressive event. The turnout of educators throughout Lake County, as both presenters and attendees, was remarkable."

The D70 technology department, including Director Pam Imholz, along with technology coaches Jill Przybylski, Caren Kimbarovsky and Chris Vipond, began working on the conference last June. Many of the presenters were District 70 teachers.
