Island Lake man pleads guilty to burglarizing church

A man accused of trying to steal from a safe at a Barrington church pleaded guilty to burglary Monday in Lake County court.

Steven Olcikas, 36, of Island Lake, was sentenced to six years in prison for trying to pry open a safe in a closet at St. Anne Catholic Church at 120 Ela St., Barrington, at 4:20 p.m. Jan. 18.

He will be placed on 24 months of probation upon his release from prison, Judge James Booras said.

Had Olcikas been found guilty at trial, he could have been sentenced to three to seven years in prison, Booras said. Olcikas was convicted in 2012 and 2003 of other burglaries.

John Ference, 39, of McHenry, who assisted Olcikas and was also arrested on charges of burglary, was found guilty of the same crime earlier this year, Assistant State's Attorney Tim Niehus said.

Ference is awaiting sentencing.
