3rd trial delayed for man accused of 1990 Iowa slaying

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - A judge has delayed the third trial of an Illinois man charged with the 1990 killing of a 9-year-old girl in eastern Iowa.

The Quad-City Times reports (http://bit.ly/1Yd8alL ) that Judge Marlita Greve on Friday granted the defense attorney's request to delay Stanley Liggins' Jan. 19 trial date. Greve gave both sides a week to come up with a new trial start date.

Juries twice convicted Liggins in the death of Jennifer Lewis, who disappeared from her Rock Island, Illinois, neighborhood. Investigators say she was raped and strangled, wrapped in a plastic bag, doused with gasoline and set on fire near a Davenport elementary school.

The Iowa Supreme Court overturned his 1993 conviction. Last November the Iowa Appeals Court vacated Liggins' second conviction and ordered a new trial.
