Decorating for the holidays can be daunting

We have been in this home for 11 years. In this time we installed new carpeting and have painted the walls several times. Eleven years ago we had three very young boys and two cats. Over time the boys, cats, family parties and just life in general have worn the carpeting out.

Our furniture is nearly 20 years old and is barely hanging on. My husband and I have no decorating sense at all. We have tried and tried but have failed. Our 12-year-old has better taste than we do. So we ask him for his opinion.

We have put money into new windows and a direct-vent fireplace to heat the living room. There is no insulation in the roof and very little in the walls. Furthermore, there is next to no ambient and accent lighting. After a hard days work we would like to relax with our boys in the living room, but the lack of proper design, poor furniture and "beyond ugly" carpeting makes us feel even more stressed.

This room is a perfect candidate for a Christmas makeover featuring natural elements.

The stone fireplace has no mantel so pots filled with evergreens, birch and berries placed on each side are a perfect solution and easy to create. A lush Lake Shore Estates pine and magnolia leaf center piece with three glass hurricanes for candles can be placed on the coffee table.

For the narrow table against the wall we created a table scape featuring a lantern, candle holders, deer and greens. The table scape can be displayed year-round by filling the lantern with different items, greens and flowers for each season.

A festive needlepoint ice skate and cardinal pillow can be placed on the sofa. To complete the room, a cluster of pre-lit Snowy Alpine trees surrounded by lit burlap gift boxes can be arranged between the glass doors.

Suggestions:

• Earthy container filled with realistic large pine picks, birch logs and burgundy berry floral picks.

• Lake Shore Estates 36-inch pine and magnolia leaf centerpiece with three glass hurricanes for candles.

• Table scape with a wooden lantern, glittered ribbon, greenery and berry picks, metallic hurricane and deer candleholders.

• Ice skate and cardinal needlepoint pillow.

• 4-foot, 5-foot and 6-foot pre-lit Snowy Alpine Trees surrounded by burlap and red bow presents.
