6 arrested in Elgin mob action Friday

Three adults and three juveniles were scheduled to appear in Kane County bond court today after being arrested on charges of mob action at an Elgin restaurant Friday night.

The adults were Dejuan Bertha, 18, of the 300 block of S. Liberty in Elgin, who was charged with robbery, aggravated battery, and mob action; Derrick Whitehead, 18, of the 400 block of Hickory in Elgin, charged with attempted robbery, aggravated battery and mob action; and Keith Hines, 18, of the 2400 block of Emily Lane in Elgin, charged with robbery, aggravated battery, mob action and resisting arrest, according to Elgin police.

Three identities of the three juveniles and the two victims were not revealed.

Elgin police responded about 9:20 p.m. Friday to a report of "a large group of subjects throwing chairs and damaging property inside" the Burger King on Dundee Avenue, said Cmdr. Dan O'Shea.

Officers saw six people outside the restaurant kicking a person, who was lying on the ground. Upon seeing the officer, the suspects fled on foot but were apprehended a short time later, said O'Shea.

After an investigation, police learned that the offenders had stolen a cellphone from a male employee inside the restaurant and caused a commotion by throwing chairs around.

When the suspects left, they attacked another man in the parking lot, hitting and kicking him, police said. That victim suffered minor cuts and bruises and was not treated at a hospital, O'Shea said.

All three adults will appear in Kane County bond call today. The three juveniles were transported to the Kane County Youth Home.
