How Illinois senators reacted to Paris attack

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk pressed the Obama administration on its refugee policy after the Friday Paris attacks, while Sen. Dick Durbin praised U.S. intelligence efforts but warned an attack can occur anywhere.

"The Administration's Director of National Intelligence James Clapper warns ISIS terrorists may use refugee flows from Syria to infiltrate the West, and FBI Director James Comey cautions the FBI cannot reliably screen all Syrian refugees for potential terrorism risk," Kirk, a Highland Park Republican, said in a statement.

"So it is incumbent on the Administration to honestly tell the American people whether or not it can prevent terrorists from using Syrian refugee flows to enter the United States in the aftermath of the 11/13 terrorist attacks in Paris."

Durbin called for vigilance.

"We have an amazing network of intelligence and security that keeps America safe, but each of us has a responsibility never to look the other way," the Springfield Democrat said.

"If there's a question mark, call somebody, bring it to their attention. But it can happen in any nation on Earth."

Among other local reactions:

• U.S. Rep. Bob Dold, a Kenilworth Republican: "In the face of these growing threats, the United States must lead the fight with our allies to quell the tide of terror and demonstrate that we will not tolerate affronts to human dignity or global security, wherever they may occur."

• U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, a Wheaton Republican, on Twitter: "The horror of this attack is beyond imaginable. Our hearts are heavy with the people of France on this tragic evening."

• U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, a Hoffman Estates Democrat: "While we do not yet know all the details surrounding these attacks, the American people stand in solidarity with all Parisians as they honor the memory of those lost and embark on the difficult path to recovery from last night's tragic events."
