Gurnee house badly damaged by fire

A two-story house in Gurnee was badly damaged by a fire Saturday afternoon.

One firefighter was taken to a Lake County hospital after an antique sewing machine inside the house fell on his head, authorities said. The firefighter was wearing a helmet and was not believed to be seriously hurt.

The fire was discovered about 2:30 p.m. at 991 Pine Grove Ave. A friend of the residents was inside and reported the blaze.

When firefighters arrived, they saw flames and smoke in the garage and the front of the house. The fire spread up to the attic, authorities said.

The person in the house exited safely with two dogs.

Firefighters believe the blaze started in the garage. A cause was not immediately known.

The house was left uninhabitable, and damage was estimated at $125,000.
