More city budget-related layoffs announced in East St. Louis

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) - East St. Louis officials are laying off a recently-hired public safety director and street superintendent due to budget woes.

The (Belleville) News-Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/1QAHoBC ) Todd Fulton received a letter this week saying he'll no longer be public safety director effective Nov. 24.

Fulton says he retired early from his former job as a Secret Service agent to take the East St. Louis job. He says he's disappointed to be leaving and had taken the job to help his community.

Also laid off is Robert Dukes, who is the street superintendent in the Public Works Department.

City Manager Alvin L. Parks Jr. says the layoffs are due to the budgetary cutbacks and more layoffs could be on the way.
