Why part of East Dundee will be without power Monday

Ninety-six East Dundee residences and businesses will be without power for about eight hours Monday as ComEd buries downtown power lines.

A step in the village's downtown redevelopment plan, the project requires the power to be cut off as ComEd workers disconnect and remove overhead power lines and connect underground cables, said Public Works Director Jim Kelly.

That process is taking place from 4 a.m. to noon Monday, and the power will be restored once the work is complete.

Kelly said the village has several reasons for burying the power lines: beautification, convenience, future development.

"The main thing is appearance," Kelly said. "It makes the downtown look a lot nicer without a lot of the big high-tension lines running through it."

The village is paying for the $725,000 project out of its tax increment financing fund.

Workers have spent the past two to three months digging trenches and installing underground cables along Meier Street, Kelly said. After Monday's work is complete, ComEd will continue removing the poles, though Kelly said he's unsure how long that'll take.

Monday's power interruption will affect residents and business owners in the area roughly bounded by Barrington Avenue, Van Buren Street, Jackson Street and Meier Street, Kelly said, adding that he hopes the power interruption will stop a block short of Main Street, Kelly said.

"We of course would hope there's nothing connected that we don't know about that would affect the traffic signals," he said, noting that police and other necessary village departments will be on call during that time.

Both ComEd and village officials have notified the necessary residents and business owners of the power interruption, Kelly said.
