Kaneland board: We'll raise pay by total of 16 percent

Kaneland schoolteachers would be paid about $3 million more over the next three years in a new contract, according to a news release from the school board.

That would translate to about a 16 percent increase in pay over the term of the contract, or about 5 percent per year, according to the release.

And the school board is proposing that a joint committee be established to determine a framework for future pay for teachers. The contract being negotiated is likely the last one to determine pay using a formula that uses level of education and years of service with the district to determine automatic raises.

The release was sent late Monday night.

The chief negotiator for the Kaneland Education Association could not be reached for comment Tuesday morning. The union has not publicized exactly what it is seeking in raises. It is having a public forum Thursday night, at which it will discuss the negotiations and the district's financial status.

The two sides have been negotiating since March. The last contract expired June 30. Last week the union filed a 10-day notice of intent to strike with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board. But it has not set a strike date.

"The Board of Education and KEA have a long history and tradition of working together for the benefit of our students, staff, and community. The Board of Education is optimistic that both parties will return to the bargaining table to reach agreement," the school board said.
